David Probert Blog | Chester May Meeting Day Three

09 May 2025
Coral Racing Ambassador, David Probert, previews his five rides on the final day of the Chester May Meeting, including Charging Thunder in the feature race of the meeting, The Chester Cup.

13:30 Chester – Cracking Gold

He ran on All-Weather Finals Day at Newcastle on his last appearance. I am hoping he can put that run behind him here. He has been handed a tricky draw in stall 10 and this is a competitive race. However, he has ability, as he showed two starts back at Southwell.

14:05 Chester – Al Wasl Storm

I like this horse a lot. He was a little unlucky to bump into one at Lingfield on his last run otherwise he would have broken his maiden. He is a progressive type, and the owner has high expectations of him. I think Chester will suit him and he is in a small field here, so there should be no traffic issues if he is good enough.

15:05 Chester – Charging Thunder

James Owen has three runners in the Chester Cup, and I will be on board Charging Thunder for him. This horse has proven himself over this distance. I am confident he will be staying on when others have cried enough.

The draw has not been kind to us with stall 16, but perhaps that will help me make my mind up with my riding plans. I will just need to get into a nice position early and hope we get some luck in running. He has speed and stamina, so he has all the attributes to do well in this race.

15:40 Chester – Rathgar

Stall 10 of 11 is far from ideal for Rathgar in this handicap contest over 1m2f, but he is a horse who is versatile in the way he can be ridden, so I should imagine I will aim to hit the front early. He ran a cracker at Epsom last time where he was beaten by less than a length, and he goes off the same mark here. I like his chances.

16:45 Chester – Law Of The Sea

This will be Law Of The Sea’s first appearance on the Flat since he ran at this course last September. He has featured over hurdles since then. It has been a while since he has shown his best form, but he is an out-and-out stayer. If he can settle early, I think he will be staying on at the finish, and he has a good chance of hitting the frame.
