Hugo Palmer Blog | Chester May Meeting Day Three & Ascot

09 May 2025
Hugo Palmer previews his five runners across the cards on the final day of the Chester May Meeting and at Ascot, including Zoffee who goes for back-to-back wins in the feature race, the Ladbrokes Chester Cup (15:05).

13:30 Chester – Cheshire Dancer & Kindest Nation

We run two in the opening handicap, and both of them are capable of winning races like this off their current marks. Kindest Nation might just prefer a bit more ease in the ground though, although they are watering the course. She is a course winner, and is drawn well. Cheshire Dancer is also having her first start of the season, and from stall six would also have an each-way chance.

15:05 Chester – Zoffee

Zoffee gave the yard a great day when winning this meeting’s flagship race 12 months ago, and he’s back for another go. We’re drawn well in four, but most of our main rivals are also, so we probably haven’t gained too much of an advantage. He’s rated a pound higher than last year, but Joe Leavy claims three pounds so in theory we’re two pounds better off than last year.

As always here he’ll need some luck in running, he’ll be slotted in and sit handy, and then need the gaps to open at the right time, as he did last year. I’m really happy with him, and if everything goes right he can win again, but I do think it’s a stronger race than last year.

15:40 Chester – Grey Cuban

Grey Cuban loves Chester, and he’s on very good terms with himself at home, so he will take his chance, although his better chances will probably come when there is a bit more ease in the ground, so any further watering would help him.

14:20 Ascot – Ruby’s Angel

Ruby's Angel is a filly we like a lot, and she ran a lovely race on debut at the Craven meeting, where the slow ground probably just caught her out. The quicker ground here should suit her, it's a competitive-looking maiden as they tend to be at Ascot, but based on her first run I imagine she will be among the market leaders here, and I hope that will reflect her chances.
