14:25 Newbury – Silent Age
I bookend the day with rides for Ian Williams, a trainer I’ve had plenty of success for over the years. I’ve not ridden Silent Age before, he was with Godolphin before switching to Ian, and his four runs this year have been on the all-weather, so hopefully returning to turf can bring out some improvement on what he’s shown so far.
15:00 Newbury – Lohoobb
A typically hot looking Newbury maiden, Lohoobb, like most of these, is making his debut. He goes well at home, is nicely bred, and Owen Burrows’ horses are running really well, so hopefully this fellow will run a nice race and learn plenty from the experience.
16:05 Newbury – Give Me The Night
Another debutant, this 3-y-o has been away for a barrier trial, which is a positive. Mark [Rimell] likes him, and while I’ve not sat on him, if we can get him to enjoy this first race, I’m sure there’ll be plenty more to come from him.
16:45 Newbury – Altareq
I really liked this Shadwell colt on his debut run, where he finished sixth in the Wood Ditton at Newmarket, but he then went to Chelmsford and was beaten when sent off favourite, which was disappointing. There was no obvious reason for the run, so I hope switching back to turf will help him get back on track.
17:20 Newbury – Glenridding
I rode this horse two runs ago, and he ran better than the finishing position suggested as he just got stopped in his run. He’s a winner on turf, and won’t mind if the ground gets a bit quicker. The Kublers are very good trainers who do well with the ammunition they have, and I can see this fellow running a big race.
17:55 Newbury – Gallant Lion
Gallant Lion has been with a few trainers, and now with Ian [Williams], he is tumbling down the handicap, and is eleven pounds lower than his last winning mark. As a result, it could all click with him one day soon, and he has winning course form, so there are reasons to think he can run well.
