Jonjo O'Neill 'very happy' with Hey Day Baby's latest performance at Leicester as she has her second run in four days
Having finished in sixth place at Market Rasen last Thursday, Jonjo & A J O'Neill were so pleased with how Hey Day Baby came out the race that they were keen to try strike whilst the iron was hot with her as the Jackdaws Team continued to have their horses run so well over the weekend.
With the conditions set to be ideal in terms of field size and the going, Hey Day Baby was declared on Saturday for Monday's Class 5 Handicap Chase over 2m6½f at Leicester, with Ben Macey once again booked to ride. The pair have built up quite the partnership in recent months with Ben riding her in a lot of her work at home and in her last five starts.
Hey Day Baby at Leicester Racecourse on Monday afternoon
As the race got underway, the early fractions were set by Harkangel and Shesupincourt who headed off in front. This was ideal for our mare as she likes to follow a strong pace, and that's exactly what she got and it allowed her and Ben to settle towards the rear of the field. Hey Day Baby travelled powerfully throughout the contest and jumped superbly as she often does, and after they'd cleared the fourth fence from home, she'd taken up the running from long time leader Shesupincourt.
Hey Day Baby jumped the next fence foot perfect, but in behind her was Northern Reel under Coral Racing Ambassador Sean Bowen who was travelling better than any in the field with the rest of them off the bridle. As they made the run down to the penultimate fence, it was Northern Reel who went to the front with Hey Day Baby still galloping on relentlessly back in second, and as they approached the finish line, that's the way it finished.

That effort from Hey Day Baby landed just over £1,500 in prize money, and due to the fact we didn't have time to run an Owner for the Day competition after the declaration on Saturday, we're delighted to announce that all of the winnings will be donated to the Injured Jockeys Fund.
Following the race we spoke to Jonjo O'Neill and he told us he was 'very happy' with the run from Hey Day Baby and that if she can start to put in these types of performances on a consistent basis then we'll continue to have plenty of fun racedays out with her.
Stay tuned for the next update from Jackdaws Castle.
