WATCH: Hey Day Baby out on the gallops with a view to return to action next month

07 Jan 2024
Coral Racing Club Trainer, Jonjo O'Neill, has provided an update on Hey Day Baby, alongside a video of her latest piece of work on the gallops.

Read the comments below to find out what's in store for the club's mare and watch the video above to see her working out at Jackdaw's Castle.

Although it was never the plan for Hey Day Baby to spend this much time on the sidelines, the extended break has actually proved to be a blessing in disguise, as it’s given her time to physically mature. Horses can take until they’re five to reach full maturity, so in that respect she’s right on target, having turned six at the start of this new year.

In the last few weeks she’s really blossomed, and looks fantastic, as well as we’ve ever had her, and she’s taking her two canters a day in her stride. Whatever small issues she’s had in the past seem long gone, and while we’re always keeping everything crossed with race horses, we are very happy with her progress.

At this stage she is still just cantering, so we’d look to step her up to faster work in the second week of January, and if that goes well, we can look for a race for her in early to mid February.

She’s had just the three starts for the club, once in a bumper and two over hurdles, and although she didn’t show us that much in those runs, we’d be hopeful there’s much more to come from her in the future, and we look forward to getting her started again in 2024.
