Cast No Shadow became the Coral Racing Club's sixth winner in some style on Friday as he made all to take the spoils in the Class 5 Restricted Novices' Stakes over five furlongs at Newcastle.

Our Hugo Palmer-trained gelding bolted out of the stalls and took up an early lead in the contest under Jason Hart, who positioned himself in the middle of the wide track at Newcastle. The application of cheekpieces helped Cast No Shadow keep true down the straight course, which was perfect given that our three-year-old never had any company alongside him. 

He extended his lead around halfway through the contest, stretching out to go around two lengths clear. Jason Hart barely had to move a muscle to keep him up to his work, and just rode him out with hands and heels to claim victory by three and-a-half lengths.

Cast No Shadow's 10 Owners for the Day walked away delighted with £487 each as part of the Owner for the Day experience prize package after being selected as the 10 lucky winners in our latest competition.

The victory took the total prize money won and shared by the club's lucky Owners for the Day to just over £60,000.

What's next for Cast No Shadow?

The team caught up with trainer Hugo Palmer at the beginning of the week and this is what he had to say following Cast No Shadow's victory at Newcastle.

"I was thrilled to see Cast No Shadow finally get his head in front on Friday night at Newcastle, and having been narrowly beaten on a couple of occasions, you’d have to say he really deserved that win.

It wasn’t the strongest race in the world, but he still had to go and do it, and Jason [Hart] reported back to me that he felt the cheekpieces had a positive effect, and although he wasn’t really challenged, he did seem to quicken well when he gave him a squeeze and asked him to go and put the race to bed.

 

The plan now is to geld him and give him a short break before bringing him back for the turf season. I always felt gelding this horse would improve him, and now he’s won a race hopefully that will give him some confidence going forward. He’s a very fast horse, and he always seems to get a good start out of the stalls, so the sprinting division is definitely one I think he can make his way in nicely.

 

We always love to have runners at Chester, and there is a three-year-old handicap over five furlongs at the May Meeting, so hopefully we’ll get into that, and we can head there. As I say, we’ll give him a little break now after we’ve gelded him, and we can see how he progresses over the next couple of months."
