WATCH: Cave Article gains his second win over fences at Hereford | Raceday Highlights
The club's six-year-old son of Court Cave got off the mark back in December at Sedgefield on just his second chase start, but unfortunately he was unable to add to that win in his next two outings after finishing third in back-to-back contests.
As the team headed to Hereford last Thursday, we were intrigued to see how Cave Article would fare with promising conditional jockey, Charlie Maggs, in the saddle for the first time. Charlie has had a real breakthrough season so far, notching up over 150 rides for a variety of trainers, with his biggest success coming at Doncaster when riding Docpickedme to victory in the Great Yorkshire Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap).
Through the early stages of the race, it was Christian's other runner, Side Stepper, who set the pace out in front, with Cave Article sitting in the middle of the pack. He travelled in his usual enthusiastic style, but managed to get into a nice rhythm, clearing the opening fences fluently. The pace began to pick up as they went into the second half of the contest, but Charlie was happy to keep Cave Article a few lengths off the leaders and just bide his time to help preserve Cave Article's energy levels.
With the penultimate fence in sight, the pair were still four to five lengths behind the leader who continued to be Side Stepper, but as they swung around the turn for home, you could see Cave Article really starting to warm to the task and he came with a strong run down the outside. The stablemates jumped the final fence together, but it was Cave Article who had the turn of foot when it mattered most and he swooped on by to win by two and a quarter lengths.
Charlie Maggs: 'The cheekpieces worked a treat today for Cave Article. He winged the last, landed running and got the job done very well.'

With only five runs under his belt so far over fences, we're hopeful there's still more improvement to come from Cave Article as he gains more experience and works his way through the ranks. A real positive factor is that trainer Christian Williams believes we'll see the very best of him on a sounder surface, so it could be likely that we'll see him in action a couple more times throughout spring and summer.
