Heavy ground leads to Lady Mendoza being pulled out of Doncaster race
It was frustrating that the weather took such a turn at Doncaster over the weekend, and as much as I’d have loved to have run Lady Mendoza on Sunday, we just knew it would be a waste to run her on that ground.
I was up at Kelso on Saturday watching the Doncaster races on TV, and it was fairly obvious that the ground was getting chewed up and was very testing, so the writing was on the wall then to be honest. Nathan Moscrop was riding for us at Doncaster, and he said it was getting very heavy, so it was a fairly easy decision not to run her in the end.
As I say, very frustrating as I’m really happy with the form she’s been in at home of late, but there’s just no point in asking her to tackle conditions we know she won’t enjoy. We’ll hope for some drier weather over the coming weeks, but whatever happens, we know she’s going to be a lovely horse to go summer jumping with this year, so hopefully there’ll be lots of fun to be had with her over the coming months.
We’ll keep her ticking over at home while we wait for better ground, and I’ll update everybody once we have another race in mind for her.
